new direction

I'm in a playful, juvenile mood, so my new work is going in that direction.  I'm going to do a series of anime-inspired pieces with aggressively cute critters.  My kids like it so far.

Alex Masket's Art

This is a piece of work from Alex Masket, a 23-year old artist who happens to be severely autistic.  He is nonverbal, yet has found a way to communicate, or at least order his world through art.  Looking at his work raises questions for me.  Where does the impulse to create and to create order out of chaos come from?  Is art a way to mediate reality?  Is this Alex's reality?  Do we instinctively recognize and enjoy certain patterns and color combinations?  A very interesting article about his work is found here:

Norfolk Academy Art show

© 2010 Sylvia Liu
My inaugural post . . . and what do you know, it's a self-serving one advertising my work.  But I'll post other stuff in the future that will hopefully be more interesting and thought-provoking . . . or maybe not.  This is one of my four pieces that will be displayed at this year's art show at Norfolk Academy, in Norfolk, VA.  It's called "Birds Will be Birds."  The opening gala and artists' reception is this Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 6 - 8:30 p.m., and the show runs through May 7.  Hope to see you there!
